The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro has made significant strides in becoming an integral part of urban transport, with the daily number of passengers having increased four times since the start of operations. As per the latest report published by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation, the daily number of users has gone up from about 35,000 in early 2023 to close to 1.5 lakh in early 2026. This growth indicates that the project has reached maturity levels and has become an important element of the public transportation network in the area due to high public confidence in the system.

The key factor that contributed to the rise in popularity has been the commissioning of Phase 2. The last segment of the Yellow Line, which connects the Secretariat to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, was opened in January 2026. The new line has created an uninterrupted link of 68 kilometers with 53 stations, thus considerably reducing commuting time between the cities. Moreover, the metro project has provided a viable option for thousands of students, civil servants, and workers who have to endure heavy road traffic when travelling back and forth every day.

Another factor that proves the effectiveness of the metro system is its reliability when dealing with high ridership numbers due to large public events, which have become strong stimuli for ridership surges. In the 2025-26 financial year, the metro network registered a total of 5.10 crore passengers as riders, with the majority being people who came to watch international cricket matches at Motera Stadium and those who participated in cultural festivals such as the Rath Yatra festival. One of the highest records of passenger use was established during an international music festival in early 2025, with more than 4.11 lakh passengers using the metro on the same weekend.

Moreover, the strategic connectivity of the metro station to important places and educational institutions ensures constant daily use. Some of the important locations that are connected by the metro include the Akshardham Temple, Dandi Kutir, and Gandhinagar Railway Station. The metro is also used by students attending some of the educational institutes such as Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya.

To cope with rising demands, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has made some changes, such as decreasing intervals between trains during peak hours. For example, on busy routes like the East-West corridor, which goes from Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam, there is now a train arriving every seven minutes. It has been made much easier to board the train because of the implementation of a digital payments system and the use of tickets stored in DigiLocker.

As far as the future developments in metro transportation, it should be noted that in recent months, the government decided to expand the rail system by adding 3.33 kilometers to it. Specifically, the route will now connect Shahpur with GIFT City. Moreover, the plans to install more car parks at popular stations also show that there are no signs of stagnation in this field. Thus, Gujarat is becoming a new leader in urban rail transportation.
