Ahmedabad-Based Startup Launches Gujarat’s First Sounding Rocket from Dholera

Gujarat has officially entered the private space exploration sector with the successful launch of its first-ever sounding rocket from a makeshift facility near Bavaliyari village in Dholera. Developed by Ahmedabad-based startup Omspace Rocket and Exploration (OSRE), the single-stage sub-orbital rocket represents a major technological leap for the state’s indigenous aerospace industry. The mission was conducted in the presence of Gujarat’s Minister for Science and Technology, Arjun Modhwadia, marking a pivotal moment for regional participation in India's broader space ambitions.

The rocket reached a target altitude of approximately three kilometers within seconds of liftoff, successfully demonstrating the structural integrity and aerodynamic stability of the vehicle. A core objective of the mission was the validation of several critical, indigenously developed technologies, including a sugar-based solid propellant motor and a custom 3D-printed torch igniter. The airframe, manufactured at the company’s Ahmedabad facility, utilized advanced carbon fiber and composite materials to ensure high strength while maintaining a lightweight profile.

Following its ascent, the vehicle executed a precise return to earth using an autonomous dual-parachute recovery system, landing safely within its predicted four-kilometer radius. This successful recovery validates the flight control and avionics systems required for more complex future missions. In addition to testing hardware, the rocket carried a mini-satellite payload designed to collect atmospheric and weather-related data, showcasing the immediate scientific utility of sounding rockets for environmental monitoring and research.

The mission was conducted under the regulatory framework of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), with extensive coordination involving the Indian Coast Guard, the Airports Authority of India, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. This collaborative effort ensures that private aerospace activities align with national safety and security standards. The launch also directly supports the Gujarat Spacetech Policy 2025–2030, which aims to foster a robust ecosystem for startups specializing in satellite technology and launch vehicle development.

This milestone is a precursor to more ambitious projects, including the development of Infinity One, envisioned as a fully indigenous reusable launch vehicle. Data gathered from the Dholera flight will be instrumental in scaling up these operations as the company moves toward commercial orbital missions. The success of this inaugural launch provides a tangible proof of concept for the state’s ability to host and support high-tech aerospace experimentation outside of traditional national research centers.

By bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical flight testing, the Dholera mission has set a new benchmark for private space innovation in Western India. As the region continues to evolve into a technology-driven industrial hub, the integration of aerospace engineering adds a sophisticated layer to its economic profile. The state government remains committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and policy support to ensure that Gujarat plays a central role in the next generation of India's space journey.
