BHAVNAGAR/AHMEDABAD- The Cyber Crime Cell has caught a group of people who did a bad thing to the Bhavnagar District Cooperative Bank. They got into the banks computer system. Took a lot of money. Rs 7.34 crore. The police arrested four people, including one guy, from Ahmedabad who they think was a part of it.
The police started looking into this after they found out that someone was getting into the banks computers at four branches. They looked closely at what happened and found out that the bad people did not use the usual tricks to get into the system. Instead they just broke into the banks computers. The bad people found weaknesses in the banks computer system. Got special access to do whatever they wanted. This meant they could get around the security checks and move a lot of money around.
Among those arrested is a woman from Ahmedabad. She is thought to be a person who helped manage the scheme. Authorities believe she played a role in handling the accounts used to wash away the stolen money. This arrest has helped investigators find clues that link the Bhavnagar breach to cyber-financial crimes in Gujarat. The people investigating think the breach was done by someone with a lot of expertise.
The suspects changed the banking software to allow transactions. They moved 7.34 crore rupees before anyone could find out what was happening. The technical people say it was not a job. They had to have a knowledge of computers to do it.The womans job was to help manage the accounts. She was very important, to the group. The police are still investigating.
Evidence collected during the one-month probe suggests that there may be connections. The initial forensic data shows that the software tools and coordination plans used in the attack are similar to those used by groups based in Dubai and China. The Cyber Crime Cell is working with teams in Gandhinagar to find out if the malware was made specifically for cooperative bank systems.
The police have managed to neutralize some of the cell but they are still trying to get back the remaining money and find any other technical helpers. This incident is a warning to cooperative banks that they need to update their old IT systems and use extra security measures for administrative access.
The banks must take steps to protect themselves from attacks, in the future. The Cyber Crime Cell will keep working to find and stop the people behind the attack. The cooperative banks must work with the police to prevent incidents.
